Houses in Tsukuba Shi, Ibaraki Ken, Kanto, Japan

The site is located on the west side of the Oda Castle Ruins, a nationally designated historic site, in Oda, Tsukuba City, and is located in a historic village surrounded by storehouses and old private houses. This time, we restored the main house built in Showa 3 and the storehouse built in Meiji 26, which was damaged by the earthquake. The main house had not been used for more than 20 years and was dilapidated, but the impact of the earthquake was only slight due to the fact that my mother opened and closed the doors every day and that it had a solid structure. In addition, the meticulous work of the craftsmen at the time of construction and the use of carefully examined good materials can be seen in various places, and the carpenter in charge was surprisingly skillful not only in the construction of the hut, but also in the way the construction was done. The client's request was for a bright and airy indoor environment, a functional and comfortable living, enhanced infrastructure, earthquake reinforcement, barrier for the elderly mother, and antique furniture and room coordination purchased by the couple while living in the UK while retaining the important characteristics of a 敷地はつくば市小田、国の指定史跡小田城址の西側に位置し、周囲には土蔵や古い民家の残る歴史ある集落内に立地。今回は昭和３年築の母屋と、震災で被災した明治２６年築の土蔵の再生を行いました。母屋は２０年以上、使用されずにいたこともあり、老朽化していましたが、お母様が毎日、戸の開け閉めをしていたことや、しっかりとした構造だったこともあり、震災での影響はわずかしか見られませんでした。また、建築当時の職人のち密な仕事ぶり、吟味された良材が使用されていたことが各所に見られ、小屋組みもさることながら、特に仕口の納まりは、担当した大工さんも驚くほどの巧妙さでした。施主からの要望は、民家の大切な特徴を残しつつ、明るく、風通しの良い室内環境、機能的で快適な暮らし、インフラの充実、耐震補強、高齢のお母様の為にバリアフリ－、また、ご夫妻がイギリス在住時に購入された、アンティ－ク家具と部屋とのコ－ディネイト等を希望されました。今回の再生では、南側に当たる土間、座敷、奥座敷の間取りはそのままとし、北側に当たる水廻りは大きく変化させました。部屋の通風、採光を確保する為に、吹抜け空間及び北側に大きな開口を設け、また、機能的な家事動線を考えて浴室を建物中央へ設け、キッチン、洗面、浴室と動線を直線でまとめました。また、これまで台所だった部屋をお母様の趣味である、野菜作りと、その野菜で漬物をつくる部屋にするなど、家族が思い思いに過ごせる居場所づくりも、大切な設計テ－マでした。１階に漬物部屋、奥様の書斎、２階は完全なプライベ－トな空間とし、小屋裏にもトイレを設ける等、隠れ家的な魅力ある空間となりました。耐震性については基礎はベタ基礎とし、土台、足固めを回しました、耐震壁は新築同様の壁量を確保しました。外観は創建当時の特徴は残しながらも、幾分か現代的に代りましたが、なるべく違和感の無いようにディティ－ルに配慮し、日本の農村らしい情景を、将来へ繫げていくことを念頭に置きました。今回、施工を担当した棟梁の生天目氏は、最初に建てた大工に勝るとも劣らない高い技術と気概をもって施工をしてくれました。また、瓦工事、左官工事、建具工事、家具工事その他の職人も、棟梁同様に非常に高い技術で支えてくれました。改めて日本の伝統技術の素晴らしさを再認識したと同時に、後継者育成が急務になりつつあることを感じた現場でした。
