Located on the northwestern tip of Amakusa Shimoshima, the largest of the Amakusa Islands scattered off the southwest of Kumamoto Prefecture, the area faces the Amakusa-nada to the west and the Chijiwa-nada to the north and is surrounded by beautiful seas. A deep indigo ocean spreads out before you and verdant mountains rise nearby, offering an excellent natural environment and scenic views of both sea and greenery. The long, narrow Tomioka Peninsula is known as a tombolo (a land-connected island); its beautiful sand dunes form a natural, sheltered harbor, and the sandspit that extends from the peninsula is also nicknamed “Little Amanohashidate.”

Tamana City is blessed with abundant natural resources such as the Ariake Sea, Kikuchi River, Mount Kodai, and the Kinpo Mountain Range, as well as numerous historical resources including many ancient tombs. The area is also active in agriculture, producing rice, tomatoes, strawberries, and mandarins, as well as fisheries like nori (seaweed) and clams. In the northern part of the city, at the foot of Mount Kodai, lies Tamana Onsen, which boasts over 1,300 years of history and excellent spring quality. Meanwhile, in the southern part of the city, there is Koten Onsen, which served as the setting for Natsume Sōseki's famous work "Kusamakura." Located between the Kumamoto and Fukuoka metropolitan areas, the region is well-connected with nearby transportation options such as the JR Kagoshima Main Line, the Kyushu Expressway, and the Ariake Ferry. 新玉名駅から博多までは40分、鹿児島まで1時間20分、大阪までは3時間半で結び、県北地域にとって九州管内はもとより関西圏が日帰りできるエリアです。

It is situated at the junction of National Route 3, which connects the north and south of Kyushu, and the JR Kagoshima Main Line that runs along it, as well as National Route 57 that runs east-west across the Uto Peninsula and the junction of the JR Misumi Line. It features excellent access to Fukuoka, Kumamoto City, and Kagoshima. Additionally, while there is abundant natural scenery of mountains and the sea, there are also large commercial facilities, allowing for a "just right rural living" experience.
